This was a derelict building, originally put up in the 1980s, and the 600 sq yards unpaved foreground was used as a taxi stand. The stand was paved with bricks and the building refurbished, computerised and equipped with an LCD TV & UPS. The land around the building has been turned into a guava orchard for the benefit of the community.
Daud Bandagi Development Trust has adopted a crumbling Maternity Health restored it and brought it back to life as a walled garden and park. Decrepit buildings, a doctor's house, a clinic have been rebuilt. Play areas for children, a walking path for women and a canteen have been established.
Between 80 - 100 women work on carpets supplied to our partners in this venture, Lahore Carpets Corporation. We are planning to expand this project to include durree making.
We buy raw cotton from neighbouring farms and give it to our women workers to card, spin & weave. Only traditional methods (spinning wheels & ancient looms) are used to keep this craft alive.
These langarkhanas have been set up with the cooperation of Bahria Town Foundation, for the benefit of brick kiln workers (women & men), providing two healthy meals per day, from 12 noon - 2 pm and from 6 pm - 8 pm. Approximately 2500 meals per day are served in the three langarkhanas.
